Japan sketches part 1

If you follow me on any social media then you'll know I've been in Tokyo recently. It was inspiring as ever. Here's a selection of drawings and paintings I did while I was there.

David Lynch (again!)

I seem to draw David Lynch every couple of months. It was Mr Lynch's birthday yesterday so it felt like a good opportunity to have another go. This is the closest I've got so far. It was originally a sketchbook page but I've scanned it in today and added a watercolour wash (a real watercolour wash pieced together in Photoshop).

Mug Shots

Some recent drawings based on old 1920s mugshots (from the archives of the Sydney Police Dept). I wanted to draw faces without being bogged down with likenesses and all these people had proper faces!

Jazz Portraits

Some recent sketchbook portraits of jazz musicians (colour pencil and watercolour) - John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Thelonius Monk, Nina Simone. I wanted to experiment with different shapes and space and I thought jazz kind of reflected what I wanted to do hence the subjects.

Plants!

Spent a lot of time over the last few weeks drawing plants. The more complicated the better. Lots of fascinating shapes and negative space to draw.

Berlin Sketches

It was Pictoplasma last week so I had the pleasure of spending a few days in Berlin. Didn't get to spend quite as much drawing as I'd like but I did get a chance to do a lot of chatting and it's good to talk, right? Top sketch is my favourite (drawn from the window of the Manolo coffee shop). First time I've used my Dilli pen out and about. I like it!

St Vincent

Hellboy Day

A sketchbook drawing of Hellboy for his 20th birthday on Saturday. Happy birthday, Hellboy! And thank you to Mike Mignola for 20 years of phenomenal work.
