David Lynch (again!)

I seem to draw David Lynch every couple of months. It was Mr Lynch's birthday yesterday so it felt like a good opportunity to have another go. This is the closest I've got so far. It was originally a sketchbook page but I've scanned it in today and added a watercolour wash (a real watercolour wash pieced together in Photoshop).

Recent Instagram caricatures

Still working on the exhibition (more soon!) so I can't post much new stuff. Instead here's a couple of recent caricatures from my sketchbook (all posted previously on my Instagram feed) - Scott Walker, Sam from Moonrise Kingdom, Prince, Andy Kaufman, the cast of Seinfeld and Audrey Hepburn. No real reason for drawing any of these. Just for fun!

Bowie drawings

Saw the Bowie exhibition at the V&A recently (excellent, by the way) and have been sketching Bowie in my sketchbook since. Here's two. They also work as drawings of Tilda Swinton! Like a magic eye caricature.

Drawing on Charing Cross Road

Yesterday I spent 4 hours outside Foyles on Charing Cross Road drawing free "Creaturized Portraits" for the Charing Cross Road Festival. Here's the majority of the people who sat for me. Towards the end I was too busy to take a photo of everyone (and one person wouldn't allow me to take a photo) so there's about 12 missing. Thanks to everyone who came along. One portrait every 6 minutes. I've ruined my brushpen!

"Rishikesh George" with Felt Mistress

Here's the reason I've been drawing the Beatles in my sketchbook so much over the last few weeks. We were delighted to be asked to contribute to the Gallery Nucleus "All Together Now - Tribute to the Beatles" show. I'm a massive Beatles fan. Apart from the music, Klaus Voorman's cover to "Revolver" and Heinz Edelmann and the entire look of the "Yellow Submarine" are big influences on how I draw. We went through a lot of ideas before we eventually settled on making George Harrison (George is my favourite Beatle to draw). Below is a series of sketches I made and above is Louise's final sitar-playing George in all his 3D glory. As you can see Louise has worked wonders. Possibly her best piece yet? Just look at that sitar! George can be viewed in the felt and is available to buy at Gallery Nucleus from July 7th. Here's hoping someone commissions us to make the other three!

Beastie Boys - RIP Yauch

I've been through many, many variations of this illustrations over the past week or so. I just wanted to get it right. Hearing about Yauch losing his battle with cancer was oddly affecting considering it was someone I'd never met. The Beasties mean a lot to me. I've seen them live more than any other band, when Louise and I moved in together it was Flute Loop that we played first in our new home and the first framed picture we put up on the wall was our Mike Mills designed "Root Down" poster. The Beasties were there when I was a teenager and still there as I approached middle age. Effortlessly growing up without "growing up". It's not only their music but their aesthetic (videos, Grand Royal magazine, the X-Large clothing label), their sense of fun (I always felt they were having my share!) and their continued interest in what they did. They were (and still are) an inspiration. I imagine losing Yauch also means we've lost the Beasties. They'll leave a huge gap that won't be filled easily. RIP MCA.

Outkast - Stankonia

My version of the cover to OutKast's classic Stankonia album for the Beck's 100 Cover Project. I put my name down to do this two months ago and promplty forgot all about it AND I think I've missed the deadline now! Finally got round to translating all the sketches into a finished piece today. I love OutKast. Andre 3000 - a living cartoon character, 21st century dandy and Morrissey fan - and Big Boi - a lapdance-club-owning Kate Bush fanatic! Stankonia is like Maggot Brain, Purple Rain, There's a Riot Goin' On and Critical Beatdown all rolled into one. Lush, organic, funky, eclectic and the work of two distinct personalities. Hope that comes across in my cover.

Alan Moore (knows the score)

Here's two pics of a work in progress. I've just drawn a series of illustrations of Alan Moore (no introduction necessary) for Paranormal magazine. I can't post the finished illos until the magazine is out but in the meantime here's the finished pencils and a half-inked version of the main pic. It's been great fun. That mark next to the nose is where I dropped my brush at about 2.30am because I yawned. Damn!

Bret & Jemaine

Flight of the Conchords back on TV screens in the UK tomorrow night. Here's a drawing to celebrate (well, it's either the Conchords or Kenny Everett and a young Walter Matthau).
