Appropriately spooky bit of live drawing for the Halloween Doodleplanet.

DoodlePlanet August

Here's my piece from August's DoodlePlanet. I used a matchpot of paint, a brush pen and an ivory POSCA. Once again I had no idea what I was going to do before I started. I've thought about planning something out in the past but I don't think that's what DoodlePlanet is about. Something interesting happens when you just start drawing. Not always good but always interesting.

First Doodleplanet of 2012

Last night was the first DoodlePlanet of the year. Here's my contribution. Emulsion, 2 brush pens and an ivory Posca (thanks, Dan!).

Christmas DoodlePlanet

My contribution to the Christmas DoodlePlanet live drawing event. Three hours to produce a piece from scratch which was then put up for auction. A Dulux emulsion match pot, black Posca and a brushpen = fun!

Back to the Tintin posts tomorrow!

Sketch-O-Matic at Cornerhouse, Manchester

Tomorrow (November 30th) I'll be taking part in the Sketch-O-Matic project at Cornerhouse in Manchester (more details HERE). I'll be producing sketches similar to the ones I did for the Selfridges press day back in July 2010 (see below). £1 a sketch! Bargain. I'll be there from 12-1pm then stick around and get drawn again by esteemed web comic pioneer and bon vivant Mr John Allison. See you there.

Recent Wolfmen

Seeing it's almost Halloween here's a couple of Wolfmen (a Wolfman with an iPod and a rock Wolfman) from my sketchbook and a heart broken Wolfman from a recent Halloween themed DoodlePlanet live drawing event.

Japan - The Headspace Monster event, Osaka

We're back from Japan. Japan was incredible (as always). It's hard to believe you can become blase about giant animatronic crabs but that's Japan for you. Sugoi desu ne. Our month in Japan was spent working towards the Headspace "Monster" event at Cafe Absinthe in Osaka. This was the art and music event that we were headlining(!). Earlier in the trip we met up with Osaka-based fashion designer, Kyoko Amano, and her team. Louise had made a doll specifically for the collaboration. I was asked to create creatures based on Osaka's iconic Sun Tower and the illustrations were then used to create a kimono fabric (designed by Tamotsu Shimada). Louise used this fabric to dress Fenella Snark (our monster catwalk model) and Kyoko dressed a real model in the same fabric. The day of the Headspace event was the first time we'd seen these photographs and we were completely blown away. Kyoko, Tamotsu, Hario (make-up artist) and Kozo (photographer) had done an amazing job. Way beyond anything we'd anticipated. Same goes for the decoration of the doors and DJ booths using my illustrations. For more pics of Louise's work for Osaka click HERE.

The event itself was hugely enjoyable. The incomparable Diane Orrett was the MC and music was provided by bands downstairs and DJs upstairs (see HERE for the full line-up) and I spent the night doing some live painting - one of my own and another smaller collaboration with Osaka artist, Hemneko. Other artists involved included Boss Hiko, Ben McDonough, David Bateman and many others exhibiting throughout the venue. What a night! Thanks to everyone involved but in particular Jamie, Aiko, Lee, Kyoko, Tamotsu, Kozo, Hario, Diane, Seth, Mariko, Nancy, Yukiyo and Noriko. That night was pretty much the highlight of our year. Domo arigato gozaimasu!

Kayamori House sliding doors mural

This weekend while Louise was holding a monster making workshop at Kayamori House I painted this mural on the sliding doors in the same room. It's been a great weekend. Met loads of interesting people. Let's do it again sometime.

DoodlePlanet August

Here's my (not quite finished) piece from DoodlePlanet last night. I forgot to take any photos of my own work so this pic is courtesy of Mr John Allison and his "smart" phone. Once I find a clear pic of the finished canvas I'll put it up. Another great night with brilliant work from John Allison, Dan Berry, Julian Kimmings, David Setter (the founder of DP), 8bit and many more. Have a look at the Facebook group for more pics.

Eurocultured

I had a great weekend drawing at Eurocultured. I was working alongside friends, Hammo and Guy McKinley and met up later with a lot of Twitter friends (who all turned out to be real people!) so it was like a proper day out. I even had some free POSCAS and free noodles. For more shots of the weekend visit the Flickr stream of "Sheila Blige" to see some great progress shots and Hammo and Guy's pieces in all their glory.

Tokyo Jazz Panda Wall

I spent two days this week painting a wall for the lovely people at Tokyo Jazz Panda in Chester. They've just moved to lovely new premises and to celebrate they asked me to paint all over one of the recently decorated walls. Here's the result.

Shakedown Preston

On Saturday I took part in Shakedown at Preston's covered market. A day of extremes - from torrential rain and grey skies to bright blue skies and the possibility of sunburn - all within the space of a few hours. This is my 8ft wall. POSCA and a pot of orange emulsion. Annoyingly, it's too similar compositionally to the piece I did at Doodleplanet last month. Never mind, there's always next time. Apart from that it was a great day painting alongside Moot (who organised the event), David Setter, HiCalorie and loads of other supremely talented artists.

More drawing on walls.

Another enjoyable night at the live drawing event, DoodlePlanet. Thanks again to David, Heidi and Matty for putting on such a great night.

A piece I did today at the Future Savings event in Chorlton (alongside Julian Kimmings and Wil Hesketh). To be auctioned in aid of Cancer Research next month. Phew, it was hot!

Drawing done at Sketchbook Sessions (Odder Bar, Manchester). Nice night. Great set by Mr Jonny Dub. Did I mention how much I love pencils?

DoodlePlanet - April

Boy! DoodlePlanet is getting busy. Last night's installment had people sprawled all over the floor drawing. We're going to need a bigger boat!

Here's last night's piece. I sold this within 20 minutes of starting so the pressure was on to finish it to a reasonable standard. Once again, a great night. More pics HERE.

DoodlePlanet - March

Detail from my piece at March's DoodlePlanet. This card was a bugger to draw on and resulted in me having a bit of a POSCA struggle on my hands. Should have used Sharpies. Next time I'll do a "Kimmings" and prep the card first with acrylic. Photograph courtesy (although he doesn't know it yet) of Julian Kimmings.

Also in attendance this month was good mate Matt Patt who had made the pilgrimage all the way down from Edinburgh. To see his excellent contribution click HERE. Subarashii desu ne!

DoodlePlanet - February

Last night was the first DoodlePlanet of '09. Despite the wintery conditions we seemed to have had the best turnout so far. Lots of great stuff on the walls. All of which can be seen on the Facebook group. Here's my contribution. The frame seemed like a great idea when I was in the top left corner but by the time I was in the bottom right felt more like a hindrance. Another hugely enjoyable night.
