See you next decade.

Last blog post of the noughties(!). We're at a friends house so here's a drawing of
Louise and our god-daughter, Ava, watching Foster's. See you next year!

Someone I saw today... nah, not really. Someone I drew today whilst watching the excellent Moon.

It's Christmas!

No new drawing today but here's a picture of Tippy in the snow. Merry Christmas, everyone!

Mods at Christmas

Saw this dude Christmas shopping the other day. Bet he loves a bit of Weller.

Merry Christmas!

Here's one of four Christmas cards I produced with Louise featuring the festive creature, Tippy Winkles. Merry Christmas!

Floaty X 2

Another alien that I drew for Paranormal Magazine's "Top 10 Greatest Aliens in the World.. Ever" (or something along those lines). Available in all good newsagents now!

Totem

I like Totems. Me and Louise are thinking of building one in the garden. Well, Louise would probably build it. I'd "art direct" from the window in my slippers.

PS Did I mention Louise won the Momiji Couture competition? Well, she did!

Do They Know It's Chipmas Time?

Today was the inaugural Chipmas (the Saturday before Christmas from now on - please amend your calendars forthwith). Me and Louise made our way to Sheffield (the spiritual home of Chipmas) and chips were consumed and a good time was had by all. Thanks to Kipi and Jamie for hosting this event, Mike and Katie for procuring the pies (despite overwhelming odds!) and for lifts and for Jon for clearing his plate like a good boy (for evidence of Jon's egg laden meal click HERE). Thanks also to Kipi's bunnies and the Two Steps chip shop. Merry Chipmas everyone!

Christmas DoodlePlanet - Complete

My finished piece for the Christmas DoodlePlanet charity auction. A great night drawing along side the regulars - David, Kimmings, Dan, Tomos, Abigail and Stuart as well as guest appearances from Joe List and John Allison. I also had the honour of being drawn by John. Click HERE to see.

Tortoise-man

This is a drawing of the man who delivered my Amazon parcel today. He was, what can only be described as, a human tortoise. Don't get me wrong, he was very pleasant but, boy, he sure did look like a tortoise! I like to imagine that he was having a courier's delivery race with another driver with big, floppy ears who was so sure he'd win that he was having a snooze in his van somewhere.

Train heave on to Euston...

Just in case I don't manage to post a sketch today, here's a photo. It was freezing this morning but at least the shadows were nice and long.

While I'm away...

I'm away from my computer for the next few days. I will TRY to blog from my phone but I'm not guaranteeing anything. In the meantime here's a pic drawn onto orange card with a couple of Poscas.

Old Skool

Some recent artwork I did for a record cover pitch. I got the job but the finished article will have no figures on it just objects (it's going to be a nice sleeve but I love drawing people). There's an animated TV ad to go with it. I'll let you know once it's in the shops and on the box.

Top Gun

An interesting character I saw this week - hi-visibility jacket, mutton chop sideburns and a "Top Gun" baseball cap. I committed him to memory (well, you would, wouldn't you?) to draw at a later date. Unfortunately, the woman I saw on the train today wearing a homemade John Barrowman t shirt couldn't really be captured in a sketch.

Adventures in Live Drawing

Two recent live drawing pics. Both at recent DoodlePlanet events (one in Chester, the other at Glyndwr university - doing it for the kids, yeah). I swapped the top piece for a painting by Mr Kimmings. Good ol' Joolsy! I also had the pleasure of drawing next to Rich AKA Ume Toys.

Quick sketch done whilst watching America's Next Top Model (season 12).

Plant Vampire (Plantpire?)

A teaser for an illustration I've just finished for next month's Paranormal magazine - Top 10 Craziest Aliens (or something along those lines). This leafy fella is officially known as "The Botanic Vampire of West Virginia" (or Keith if you're his Mum). I'll post the rest once the magazine is out. And remember, don't have nightmares.

Heppy & Tommy Floom

Two character designs for an idea I've got for a comic strip- meet Heppy and Tommy Floom. It's an idea which will allow me to draw creatures, cities, crowd scenes and characters jumping up and down playing guitar - think The Moldy Peaches meets Fraggle Rock. Needless to say, Louise is already half way through making a plush version of Tommy....

Update - Plush Tommy now finished! Click here.

Hopton Moss - Privet Detective

Introducing, Hopton Moss - Privet Detective. He lives to solves crimes, drink Martini, woo the ladies and antagonise Inspector Cumulus ("You don't want to make me Nimbocumulus, Moss! You wouldn't like me when I'm Nimbocumulus."). I'm hedging my bets here but I'm sure you'll be "lichen" him! Sorry.

Tokyo Jazz Panda Wall

I spent two days this week painting a wall for the lovely people at Tokyo Jazz Panda in Chester. They've just moved to lovely new premises and to celebrate they asked me to paint all over one of the recently decorated walls. Here's the result.

Happy Halloween!

My piece from the Halloween DoodlePlanet event in Chester this week. I was drawing between Hammo and Guy McKinley so the pressure was on a bit. They both produced amazing work. Another great night.

10 years at the Guide.

This month marks the 10th anniversary of my first Guardian Guide cover. It was a REALLY big deal getting my first cover (top left) and the buzz has never worn off. I've had around 25 covers in the past 10 years and these are some of my favourites. Nothing matches the feeling of being out and about on a Saturday and seeing people reading the Guide with my illustration on the cover. As well as the covers I've drawn illustrations for over 350 Hard Sell columns, had the cover to the Guardian Glastonbury Guide (spotted around the neck of John Peel, Paul McCartney and, er, Badly Drawn Boy) and provided icons for the Guide website. It's been an absolute blast and I've worked with some really great people. Long make it continue. TEN years! Where does the time go?!

Shakedown Preston

On Saturday I took part in Shakedown at Preston's covered market. A day of extremes - from torrential rain and grey skies to bright blue skies and the possibility of sunburn - all within the space of a few hours. This is my 8ft wall. POSCA and a pot of orange emulsion. Annoyingly, it's too similar compositionally to the piece I did at Doodleplanet last month. Never mind, there's always next time. Apart from that it was a great day painting alongside Moot (who organised the event), David Setter, HiCalorie and loads of other supremely talented artists.

Inspector Cumulus Sculpt

Look at these! Got these pics from Andy Woo over at Crazy Label this morning of the clay sculpt of the Inspector Cumulus toy. What an incredible sculpt! Few things to iron out yet but I've no doubts AT ALL that this is going to be a great toy. Crazy Label have done an amazing job. It's an absolute pleasure working with them. His head, in the finished toy, will be a milky, semi-opaque plastic. Let me know what you think. More pics here.

Trees VS Buildings

I drew this in my sketchbook last night (whilst watching Project Runway). Coloured it today. Louise thinks it reflects my state of mind.

Recent sketchbook pages

Some recent pages from my sketchbook. May develop into paintings at some point.

More drawing on walls.

Another enjoyable night at the live drawing event, DoodlePlanet. Thanks again to David, Heidi and Matty for putting on such a great night.
